Lord of War

Der letzte Film mit Nicolas Cage ist mehr als sehenswert. Das war eine richtige Ueberraschung, den ich mich nicht vorgestellt hatte, das es so einen Film gaebe.

Auch komisch ist das, dass man von diesem Film fast gar nicht in den Medien gehoert hat (ein Google News Suche hat mir auch fast nur unbedeutende Ergebnisse gegeben). Na, die haben schon zu viel zu tun mit der Vogelgrippe.

Das Thema diesem Film ist doch ueber was toedlicher als Vogelgrippe: Waffen, besonders Waffenhandel. Wie gesagt in dem Film: "Massenvernichtungswaffen sind nicht Nuklearwaffen sondern den AK47". Den AK47 toetet viele Leute jeden Tag, ist auf jedem Kampf in der Welt zu finden.

Nicolas Cage, als Waffenhaendler, ist hier am Spitze. Gut wie nie. Dieser Film ist heftig, original und schockierend. Es steht immer in Grau bereich; eigentlich ist "Lord of War" genau das Gegenteil, von was man von ein Hollywood Film erwarten kann: genial, aber verwirrend.

Découverte musicale amusante

Marre de la musique pop ennuyeuse! Devant le peu de nouveauté musicale ces temps, je me réfugie dans l'humour. Beatallica, et surtout les Hayseed Dixie ! Ca vous remet direct de bonne humeur ; garanti meilleur résultat que n'importe quel truc new-age.

Mais de quoi donc s'agit-il ?
Beatallica rejoue des morceaux des Beatles, comme si c'était Metallica qui les avait composé. Sacrilège, oui, mais délicieux.
Hayseed Dixie rejoue AC/DC et de nombreux standards du rock à la sauce country et bluegrass. Jouissif.

En plus d'être drôles et créatifs, ces gens là sont intelligents. Beatallica, grâce à une distribution volontairement libre de ses morceaux sur le net (sous licence Creative Commons) s'est fait rapidement connaitre, et maintenant ils tournent dans le monde entier ! Après tout, ni Bach ni Mozart n'ont fait chier les gens pour qu'ils achètent leurs CD*. Je serais sûrement à leur prochain concert à Stuttgart le 2 mai !

Hayseed Dixie ne distribuent apparemment pas gratuitement leurs albums, mais sont cools du côté de l'enregistrement de leurs concerts. Et ils viennent jouer pas très loin d'ici, à Heilbronn, le 6 mai, la même semaine que Beatallica. Quelle coincidence ! Vive la musique live (et amusante).

Finally a beautiful GNU Emacs !

Now I have an Emacs with 2 wonderful features:
- GTK support (well, I would have prefered Qt, but it's OK though)
- XFT (understand: beautiful) fonts

I found an Gentoo ebuild package under Gentoo bugzilla, and this Emacs Wiki howto. The installation was not really that difficult, I just had to adapt the cvs server adress and login datas. Not a big thing!

It's really a pleasure to use, I can't resist to show you a little screenshot... Still I like to use my emacs in Konsole, because it's totally transparent even if I'm editing on a server at the other side of the world.

PS: have you ever used ed, the standard text editor??

The Art Of Unix Programming

Yesterday I just finished reading this book online. It's really a great book in this category; a very good explanation of the Unix culture, and I think any (non-)Unix programmer would have something to learn in this book. There are some very good description of design patterns (not object-oriented ones!), and a lot of other good ideas. It's like an analyse of the Unix programming world, the customs, the people that do it, etc.

I often disagree with Raymond's political opinions, but it's not the topic of this post. Even if the book is most of the time very partial, it's a very useful piece of information. I especially loved the chapter 15, in the part about make, the chapter 18 about documentation and the chapter 19 about best practices. Worth reading, even if it is quite a big book.

De retour

Bonjour à tous; pour des raisons personnelles je n'ai pas bloggé depuis quelques temps. Ce qui ne veut en aucun cas dire que je n'ai rien fait ces temps, bien au contraire. Voilà un peu tout dans le désordre:

- Le 11 février, je suis allé à un concert mémorable: Deep Purple, et... oui Alice Cooper ! Vive les années 70, il y avait vraiment beaucoup de monde. Alice Cooper a ouvert le concert ; Hard Rock très années 80, provoc très années 80 aussi... En fait personnellement j'ai trouvé ça assez marrant. Et puis ensuite Deep Purple. Alors là c'est vraiment impressionnant. Les musiciens étaient au top niveau. A la guitare, Steve Morse est vraiment l'un des rois du rock avec Steve Vai et loin devant Petrucci. Et quel plaisir d'entendre 'Smoke on the Water' live ! J'aurais jamais cru ça !
NB : Le concert était juste à côté du musée Mercedes et du stade de foot de Stuttgart, là où la France va jouer contre la Suisse ! A noter les énormes pubs pour Kärcher tout autour du stade, je connais un de nos politiciens qui va se réjouir en regardant le foot.

- Le 10 et le 11 nous avons chanté avec l'orchestre de l'Université, respectivement à Stuttgart et à Tübingen. Steven Zielke, le chef américain qui dirigeait notre oeuvre, Dona Nobis Pacem de Ralf Vaughan Williams, était vraiment génial ! Un type très sympathique, qui nous a beaucoup appris sur la politique américaine. Et nous lui avons beaucoup appris sur les bières allemandes ! Dona Nobis Pacem est une pièce qui me touche beaucoup, spécialement les mouvements 3, 4 et 6 qui sont d'une beauté absolue. On peut trouver que certains mouvements (le 5 particulièrement) soient trop forts; 5 minutes de fortissimo ça fatigue il est vrai un peu les cordes vocales... Mais l'expérience en valait vraiment le coup. A Tübingen nous avons joué à guichet fermé avec 1000 spectateurs donc ce fut vraiment une réussite, même si certaines personnes dans le choeur ont préféré la représentation de Stuttgart.

- Beaucoup de lectures sinon, en grande partie éléctroniques : Etant rentré dans l'univers de Neal Stephenson (Le cycle baroque), je me suis lancé dans un de ses essais, In the Beginning...was the Command Line. Je ne peux que vous encourager de le lire, c'est à propos de systèmes d'exploitation et de liberté. Même si vous ne connaissez rien à l'informatique, lisez cet essai, vous allez apprendre beaucoup. De la même façon j'ai fini hier The Art Of Unix Programming, aussi disponible en ligne gratuitement. Extrèment intéressant, je vais écrire un article en anglais à ce propos.

Heute habe ich ein Brief von der Uni bekommen... Fuer irgendwelche Grund mag ich gar nicht, Briefe von der Uni zu bekommen. Die errinern mich immer, dass ich irgendwas nicht gemacht habe, oder falsch, usw.

Heute war das nicht : blablabla sie erhalten eine Email Adresse blablabla...

OK, dann loge mich ein, und schaue mal was es da gibt... 161 Emails in Eingang!!! Eigentlich gibt's diese Adresse seit 2003; das hatte ich als frischer Erasmusstudent, der schon Internet zu Hause hatte, gar nicht mitbekommen! Na ja, jetzt lese ich mal, was es da gibt, und alles, was ich verpasst habe!

Jetzt ist wieder schon Zeit, unser naechstes Konzert zu ankundingen!
Wir singen zwar am 10.02 in der Stuttgarter Stiftskirsche, und am 12.02 in der Festsaal der Neu Aula in Tuebingen.
Nein, wir singen nicht Mozart. Was wir singen: Dona Nobis Pacem, von Ralf Vaughan Williams.

Natuerlich freue ich mich, wenn ihr kommt (und zahlreich!). Das Stueck ist etwas ungewoehnlich, es ist naemlich englische Musik von der 30er Jahren. Man kann sagen, es klingt wie Filmmusik; aber solche Filmmusik gab es noch kein in dieser Zeit! Diese Musik ist harmonisch und rythmisch sehr interessant; es wirklich ein anderes Welt als die in Deutschland sehr bekannte romantische Musik. Laesst ihr einfach ueberraschen; von dem Orchester kommt dazu eine Symphonie von Brueckner.

Plaetze gibt's bei mir zu Sonderpreis (billiger als Studentenpreis)...

Big, bigger, biggest

Whooa. I'm speechless. There is a big tower currently beeing built in Dubai right now. Check this wikipedia article for more informations... You can find a picture of the current state of construction, too.

While I discovered that yesterday on TV, I quickly thought:
- The europeans don't really live in a moving world right now, but a lot of other parts of the world do. Even the USA seem to be late (compare this to the new World Trade Center project).
- The technology don't evolve slow, as lot of people seem to believe. The big projects are not dead at all.

This project is for sure a strategical move of the Emirates; they see that their current economy will not sustain decades, and they have to use their money to invest in transforming their land to promising economy: services and tourism (I know, tourism is a kind of service).

I'm really impressed by this project. As we could see in the last years that the leading influence of the US in science went down (abandon of the space exploration, problems with intelligent design, no 'courageous project' anymore outside monitoring and spying citizens), some other countries are taking the lead. It's good. The next years and decades are going to be very interesting because we're gonna see a new shape of the world order.

The point is: nobody wins at being conservative. Forces that create tend to win against forces that destroy. This is why we are living in a cilivized world, and why the wealth in the world is globally increasing. It would be funny to compare the price of this building to the one of the war in Iraq...

Still, there is some hope for Europe. The Airbus 380 is an example. The World Cup could be bring happiness and patriotism back to Germany. This would be good, because so much people are so talented in this country; they just need to get more dynamic. Far from impossible! A good thing: their new chancelor is impressing the whole world...

KDE and documentation

Inside Konqueror I just pushed the key ['] instead of [Return]. Surprise, it opens me a very discrete but powerfull dialog for incremental search (like, you know, in Emacs)! It's very cool, indeed, I didn't knew at all there was such a feature in Konqueror! Sure Firefox had some influence ...

I'm gonna sure use it a lot! But besides this, I have to question the documentation of KDE in general. There are some main problems in my opinion:

1 - The format of the documentation. Call me stupid, but I would like to be able to type in 'man konqueror'. Don't work. But there should be at least a 'man kde', for the newbie that stopped his X server and don't know how to start KDE anymore. Don't laugh, it happened to me in the first days I was using Linux, took me 1 week to find someone that could explain me how to restart X...

2 - The documentation is outdated! My document states: Revision 3.1 (2002-09-22); but when I click on 'about', I can clearly observe that I do have the version 3.4.3 of KDE (13 Oct. 2005)! Seems documentation is to Linux what security flaws are to Windows! Anyway, how can you be credible with this? How useful are features that are not documented?

3 - The presentation of the documentation. Please at least do an index for each software! This KDE-type Help system is only useful for the newcomer that want to follow a tutorial-like documentation. That means, almost nobody. When you're searching doc, you've to go through the whole doc of a software. Not really convenient. I don't say this tutorial part has to be changed, but beside this we need an easy to find, flexible and complete reference manual too.

Making documentation is painful. I know, because these times I'm documenting my own software at work. My opinion is that programmers hate writing documentation not because they can't or don't want to write (many of them like reading, even if it's mainly SF ;), and would even like to be SF writers... so much for the cliche!), but because writing documentation implies that you have to understand all the code and explain it with words. In other terms it forces you to explain your design. By making it you will often find a lot of logical errors, inconsistencies, and bugs. This is not comfortable, so the programmers tend to avoid documentation, as well as they often avoid design, spec and code review.
Sure, writing doc uses time that could be spent writing code. But it also helps improving and correcting the existing code. This is maybe more important...

The cool thing with blogs is that there is only little to do to have a good design because the software cares of it for you. So very intelligent people can finally present their research, knowledge and opinion in a well-presented and attractive way. I mean, you all know how a standard Web page of a professor uses to look like...

Noam Chomsky speaks about politics

For the ones who don't know, Chomsky is one of the most influencial linguist of the last century, if not the most. He made a grammar classification which is the base of all computer languages, and did many of the most important theories in linguistics of the last century.

He has his own site, too. Few people have such a good site... (and even less people of his age !)

The man behind Apple

When you think Apple, you're surely thinking... Steve Jobs. Right. Or not so right?

Then, the geek in you will think Steve Wozniak. Even better. But he's not at Apple anymore for a while.

Who, then? The answer: Jonathan Ive. This man is the most influent designer at Apple. With his team, he's designed almost all significant products of Apple since the first iMac, including the iPod and the georgeous Cinema Display.

This is really a key player. Is there any other computer firm having such a good designer? I don't think. With him Apple took the place of Sony on the top of the coolest electronic brands. Who is speaking about Sony's design right now? Not that much people. A PSP may be cool, but compared to an iPod nano it's ridiculous (I'm just speaking about design here).

Maybe finally doing tech objects that are elegant is a new thing. Apple products are elegants and easy to use. Doing a good design is often felt from the customer's view as a proof that he's important. The producer is doing quality because he cares about the customer: that's the customer's feeling. Actually the producer does better quality to sell more. But this is a trade-off. By doing quality the producer has to spend more money, thus making the product more expensive.

Ive's design is unique, and makes Apple even more famous than the quality of their products. And in design, this is often the case that a few people are responsible for outstanding things. Did someone heard about products that look better than the Apple ones? I didn't. Please tell me if you see one. In my opinion, some other companies can copy Apple, but with a man like Ive on the board, they're never going to have a single step forward.

Oui je sais ces temps-cis je parle trop des journaux mais tout de même, ceci n'est-il pas idiot:

Fatigués par les incessantes querelles de partis, les électeurs allemands ont jugé que seule une grande coalition CDU-SPD pouvait sortir l'Allemagne de l'ornière.

Bien sûr les électeurs allemands sont assez spéciaux, c'est pourquoi chacun a décidé de voter à la fois à gauche et à droite... (mais pas centriste!). [Mode sacarstique enclenché]Je suspecte personnellement tous les couples d'Allemagne de constituer une conspiration destinée à élire un gouvernement de cohabitation! Et hop, l'un vote à droite et l'autre à gauche...[Mode sacarstique éteint]
Rassurez-vous les médias allemands disent aussi le même genre d'idioties. C'est d'ailleurs marrant à l'étranger comme on s'aperçoit vite que les "maladies nationales" sont très internationales, en fait. Ca donne un peu de recul, ça n'est pas plus mal !

Sympathique

Aujourd'hui on parle de mon blog dans le journal de Saône-et-Loire. Très sympathique, d'autant plus que cela vient de ma région natale ! Espérons juste que je ne me laisserai pas changer par cette célébrité soudaine ;)

Ah le bon vin du Jura !

Cette fois j'ai pu ramener chez moi deux bouteilles de mon père ! Une de chardonnay, et une de macvin (si vous ne savez pas ce que c'est, vous trouverez de très bonnes informations sur ce magnifique site).
Je n'en ai pas encore dégusté, mais ce que j'ai goûté chez mes parents m'a déjà mis en appétit. Je suis particulièrement curieux au sujet du rouge (cépage du Beaujolais si j'ai bien compris); dans quelques années il va sûrement être vraiment bon. Mon père fait du vin pour son entourage (et surtout son plaisir), mais je dois dire que c'est vraiment réussi et fait avec beaucoup de sérieux.

Le macvin est particulièrement surprenant, mes amis Allemands (et autres) ont tous été surpris par ce vin. De l'avis de tous c'est très bon, mais impossible d'en boire trop tellement c'est sucré!

Il y a beaucoup de vin en Allemagne aussi; pas si mauvais que beaucoup de gens pourraient croire. D'ailleurs en Allemagne les gens boivent de plus en plus de vin; et surtout du vin local. Le vin allemand est étrangement semblable au vin du Jura: plutôt fort, avec beaucoup de caractère. Dans tous les cas c'est un vin de tradition qui n'a rien à voir avec du vin de Californie ou d'Afrique du Sud.

L'interview mystère

Curieux article dans Le Monde. Il s'agit d'un entretien, d'accord, mais de qui ? Suis-je aveugle ou ça n'est écrit nulle-part ? Si quelqu'un a une réponse, les commentaires sont à vous !

De façon générale il est à déplorer la qualité de nombreux journaux en ligne au niveau de la présentation. Cela a pour conséquence:
1. de nous décourager à passer à une version en ligne payante, car probablement aussi pleine de fautes, d'oublis, etc.
2. de discréditer la version papier de même.

Dans Le Monde, il est à regretter une programmation du site non conforme aux standards, d'où de fréquents problèmes d'affichage du site. De plus, les annonces de l'AFP ont souvent une typographie déficiente.
Les autres grand sites ne sont pas en retrait non-plus. Le Figaro et Libération ne font pas forcément mieux.
Des contres-exemples ? Radio-France par exemple. En plus ils promeuvent les formats de diffusion libres (des systèmes de transfert des données qui n'appartiennent à aucune entreprise), même s'ils sont encores timides de ce côté

Da wird es auf 4 Seiten erklaert (ab s. 140), was ist System Automation, was tut es und warum. Mehr kann ich nicht sagen, es ist schon sehr gut im Artikel zusammengefasst.

Le ton des journaux

Il y a comme quelque chose qui ne me plaît pas quand les journaux français écrivent sur un tel ton:

"Avec un joueur du nom de Gordon Brown, Ecossais teigneux et obsessionnel" (Libération), au sujet du ministre des Finances britannique

"LA DÉCISION de Noël Mamère de se retirer de la course à la candidature écolo pour 2007" (le Figaro)

Il serait peut-être temps de faire de la vraie information, et d'arrêter de dénigrer les gens sans argument d'appui, messieurs les journalistes!

Ich will mich in Deutschland bewerben

Schon ist das schwierig, ein Lebenslauf in seine Muttersprache zu schreiben, dann in einer Fremdsprachen, von denen mann der Gefuehl hat, noch nicht zu beherschen, ist noch vielfach schwieriger.

Also, auf der Suche nach Information (und das gibt eine Menge auf dem Netz, wo man alles liesst, und auch das Gegenteil von alles) habe ich so einige Seiten gefunden, die mich eigentlich nicht so ganz freuen; da weiss man, das man in Deutschland ist und nicht mehr in Frankreich:
- Nichtgradliniger Lebenslauf bedeutet ebenfalls nichts Gutes. Hier wird überprüft, ob Ihr Berufsleben konsequent geplant ist.
- Vermeiden Sie die Auflistung alltäglicher Hobbys. Angaben zum Freizeitverhalten macht Sie als freizeitorientiert verdächtig.

Neben diese formale und kulturelle Unterschiede, die in diesem Bereich besonders stark sind (z.B. in Frankreich kann man irgendwann seine Studium aufhoeren, wenn man eine 'license ' kriegt man dann jedes Jahr wieder ein neues Diplom... Wird bald nicht mehr so sein). Schwierig ist ueberhaupt fuer mich, eine passende Praesentation zu machen fuer mein Lebenslauf. Denn ein graphik-designer bin ich gar nicht, und die benutzung von LaTeX vermeidet von selbst, dass ich was extravagant produziere. Doch wuerde ich aber gern einige Gerade zeichnen, und das Format der Seite ein bisschen aendern, das braucht aber wie immer studenlang die Dokumentation zu lesen.

I was completely astonished by this post: An australian has been executed in Singapore for drug traffic.

But even more astonishing is this phrase at the beginning of the article:
This chinky faggot isn't Australian -- he's some chinky asian piece of shit. Why the fuck should I care if he dies?
I deleted this but it makes me doubt of the validity of the Wiki concept. This one was not subtle at all but who knows what errors/opinions can be written in a Wiki? While Wikipedia is becomming a de facto reference for a lot of people, we have to think about it seriously.

Nice concept car from France!

The Smart Roadster will be soon dead. So sad (I wanted to work almost just to buy one of these...), but as least it left some very good ideas.

Presented these days at the 2005 Bologna Motor Show, this Citroen C-Airplay looks very good! I like the clean and elegant design, the environment-friendly concept (because the Pryus is not really what I would call a beautiful car). Notre DVD!

Oui ca y est je l'ai! L'integralite de notre concert du War Requiem a la Stiftskirche de Tuebingen. Tous ceux qui y etaient savent que ce fut un concert enorme et fantastique. Le revoir en video est une grande emotion! La qualite est vraiment tres tres bonne, bien que je n'aime pas me voir en video...

Les passages puissants sonnent vraiment de facon incroyable, bref venez chez moi je me ferai un plaisir de vous montrer ce DVD!

Vu en ce moment à la télé sur RTL:

Vendredi doit avoir lieu un nouveau record du monde de tombée de dominos. Problème: un petit oiseau s'est introduit dans la salle. Je vous dis même pas le souci du producteur et de tous les pauvres gars qui ont placé des dominos depuis septembre... Pour l'instant l'oiseau qui est la plupart du temps pendu dans les structures du plafond pour les lumières n'a abattu que 23 000 dominos. Bien sûr, demain vous saurez le dénouement de tout ça si vous regardez RTL...

Hallo zusammen,

Jetzt kann ich ein Rückblick haben auf unser Probewochenende mit der Camerata Vocalis. Diese Wochenende war anstrengend, da wir unser ganzes Programm verarbeitet haben. Es gibt noch zu verbessern aber es würde schon ganz viel gelernt zwischen Freitag und Sonntag Abend. Es fängt richtig an, schön zu klingen.

Wir machen Konzert in der Tübinger Stiftkirche am Samstag, den 19.11, um 20 Uhr. Eintritt ist frei, ich hoffe ihr kommt da zahlreich. Ich würde mich natürlich freuen, euch nach dem Konzert zu treffen!

Was wir singen werden: "Musik zum Totensonntag". Kein Angst, es wird nicht langweilig sein. Am gegenteil gibt es midenstens 2 Stücke, die ziemlich überraschend sind, z.B. diese von Josquin des Pres (vive la France !) mit 24 Stimmen. Es ist wirklich eine Herausvorderung für mich, das zu singen. Weil es so viel Stimmen gibt soll jeder selbstständig sein, und in der Tat ist das wirklich nicht einfach!

Bald wir es auch ein DVD von uns geben! Diejenigen, die bei der War Requiem in Tübingen dabei waren, können sich vorstellen, das es sich richtig gelohnt hat, eine Video davon zu machen. Ich freue mich so sehr; leider werde ich nur 2 oder so DVD kriegen können, aber es sollte ein CD auch geben (garantiert ohne Rootkit !), und ich werde mich auch freuen, euch die DVD zu zeigen.

Bis Sonntag, ich soll jetzt der Josquin üben ;)

Seit lange Zeit wollte ich schon ein grosser Artikel schreiben ueber Studiengebuehr. Aber es gibt einfach zu viel zu sagen.

Ich bin gegen Studiengebuehr. Zumindest in der Form, die in Deutschland gemacht wird, d.H. ohne Ausnahme: alle sollen kassieren, egal was die Eltern bekommen.

Die jenigen, die sagen, 'das ist zurecht', von was ich gesehen habe, haben meistens keine Eltern die Fiat fahren... Weil, wie zeigt diese Spiegel Artikel, die Studenten, deren Eltern nicht genug Geld haben, werden wegen Zinsen 2 mehr bezahlen! Aber wie sagen die einige, das ist zurecht! Die sind doch dumm, diese Studenten! Warum haben die dann keine reiche Eltern gefunden?

Die Armen werden weniger freiheit haben, weil die Banken ein Kontroll auf ihre Studium haben wird. Und ich weiss persoennlich, das die Studium erst schief gehen kann, und dann auf den richtigen Weg. Aber ohne Drueck, und mit Freiheit.

Es gibt noch sehr viel zu sagen, aber ich habe noch einges zu schreiben

1. Wenn die Qualitaet der Studium ganz vom Geld abhaengig ist, wie kann mann das Airbus 380 erklaeren ? Das ganz war grossteil von Franzosen und Deutsche gebaut, die hatten kein Olympische Schwimmbad und Fluegel in der Kafeteria, die haben irgendwie was gebaut, was die Amerikaner mit 40000 dollars/Jahr Studium nicht geschafft haben...

2. Schauen sie die Oesterreicher an. Die haben zwar Studiengebuehr eingefuert, und alle unsere CDU Abgeordnete wiederholen es ohne Ende. Was die nicht sagen, und das habe ich von eine Oesterreiche Studentin gehoert, ist, dass die so viel protestiert haben, dass es dann eine Gebuehrenfrei Studium fuer die 10% armer Leute gibt; was meiner Meinung nach entspricht umgefaehr der Teil der Studenten, die sonst ein Kredit machen sollen haetten. Provokation: Vielleicht ist es auch kein Zufall, dass die Oesterreicher im Massen und erfolgreich protestiert haben, und dass es dort weniger Arbeitlosigkeit gibt. Manchmall soll man ein bisschen aktiv und willig sein, und nicht blind folgen, was die Politiker sagen (egal Recht oder Links).

3. In Frankreich gibt es private Hochschulen mit sehr grosse Studiengebuehr und "top Qualitaet Lehre". Wissen Sie was ? Oeffentliche (verstehen Sie "kostenlose") Hochschulen sind immer am Top rankiert: im Musik, Litteratur, Politik, Ingenieurwissenschaft... Ausser in einem Fach, wo dort private Hochschule richtig am Top sind: BWL. No comment.

James Labrie plus que Live !

Vendredi avec mon frère nous sommes allés au concert de Dream Theater à Stuttgart. Alors comme mon petit frère arrivait à Stuttgart en milieu d'après-midi et qu'on allait sûrement pas faire un aller-retour jusqu'à Tübingen pendant le concert, on s'est promené dans Stuttgart.

Moi je propose bêtement d'aller faire un tour vers la salle de concert. Quand on arrive, un camion noir est garé (bon signe !), et juste derrière deux gros cars à deux étages. Mon frère me sort "Hé t'imagines on voit quelqu'un du groupe ??". Ca n'a pas raté, on arrive devant les bus et qui est là ? John Petrucci, apparemment décontracte.

Après avoir aperçu Mike Portnoy, on reste devant les bus et qui arrive là ? James Labrie... Alors on est allé vers lui, j'ai pu échanger quelques mots, et il a bien volontier signé le ticket de mon frère. Qui était déjà satisfait, quoi qu'il se passe pendant le concert !

Dans la belle salle de concert classique, c'était un peu surprenant de voir une scène pour un groupe de Metal... Enfin le son au moins était vraiment bon, ainsi que notre place, 3è rang juste devant Myung. Il y a pire... En plus les allemands ne poussent pas, donc c'était vraiment le gros confort !

Octavarium: tournée anniversaire, 20 ans depuis Majesty. On a eu droit (splendide) à un morceau de chaque album. Rien que les tubes ! Panic Attack au début m'a vraiment scié; indescriptible. La vraie tuerie du concert ça a été Octavarium. En écoutant le CD, vous étiez-vous rendu compte que jusqu'au premier coup de batterie, Rudess joue absolument seul ? Il fait aussi la lap-steal guitar. A se demander à quoi servent les autres !

Un magnifique Learning To Live pour finir après 3h30 de concert, et voilà. Bye bye, James ;)

J'ai réussi ce matin la très dure audition pour le Camerata Vocalis, le choeur de chambre de l'université. Je suis plus que limite au niveau lecture de partition mais ma voix a convaincu le chef. Ah quelle émotion!! J'avais ce but depuis déjà quelques années, mais sans jamais vraiment trop compter dessus parce que je savais que ca allait être vraiment difficile.

De plus le chef, Tobias, m'a fait un cadeau magnifique, puisqu'il m'a rendu mon livre de Pierre Boulez ajouté d'une signature de la main même du célèbre chef/compositeur. Magnifique, simplement magnifique.

Prochain concert dans moins d'un mois (!!!); et en juin prochain concerts a Copenhague et en Provence. J'en rêve déjà !

Schwere Lesung

Sie haben sicher gemerkt, es gibt da seit schon lange eine Foto von einem Buch, Die Schatten Der Globalisierung von Joseph Stiglitz. Nicht ein Dummkopf, der Mann ist Nobelpreis fuer Wirtschaft, war Professor in alle die grösste Amerikanische Unis, die es euch einfallen kann, und war hauptsächlich Chefökonom der Weltbank.

Doch das ganzes Buch is so voll von Erklärungen, die mir einfach stimmlos lassen. Es nervt einfach, das zu lesen, weil es berichtet, wie bloed und unmenschlich unsere Welt heute funktionniert. Also ich bin nur sehr langsam, weil nach 4 Seite habe ich schon kein Lust mehr, und weiss überhaupt nicht was dagegen zu machen.

Ich habe allerdings nur 90 Seite gelesen (ja nur...) aber kann schon sagen, dieses Buch ist ein must have fuer jeder, der wissen will, wie unsere Welt heute geht!

Daneben habe ich mehr Theorie-orientierte wirtschafliche Bücher angefangt, es ist leichter zu lesen, nicht wegen der Komplexität, sondern nur weil es nicht so wütend macht!

Wieder da!

Ja, ich bin zurück von Frankreich, nach ein kleine Reise bei meiner Familie...

Ich fänge richtig an, mich zu 'eindeutschen', ich finde jetzt Frankreich sehr schön!

Allerdings waren die letzte Wochen nicht leer, ich habe viel Musik gemacht mit 2 kleine Projekte mit Chöre, das war wunderschön und hat mich noch mehr Spass gemacht!

Finalement je n'ai pas trop le courage d'écrire tout ça en anglais; certains en seront contents !

En fait il n'y a pas tellement à dire. C'était énorme et il fallait y être, c'est tout. Mes oreilles s'en souviennent encore. C'était fort, vraiment très fort; dans tous les sens du terme !

La salle (Longhorn) se trouve dans une zone industrielle, pas de risques de tapage nocturne ! On a réussi à se trouver une place surélevée sur le côté, au niveau de l'ingénieur du son : le rêve quoi.

Le set de Sardinas c'était un peu comme la dernière fois, sauf que ce coup-ci, n'étant pas à 2 mètres de l'ampli guitare j'ai pu écouter sa musique! Ce gars est vraiment un fou. 2 fois il a coupé ses amplis et fait tout un couplet en total acoustique, dans une salle de 1000 personnes avec la clim à fond ! Du blues énorme, variant du Delta Blues au Heavy Metal, un look de vrai texan et une voix qui tue.
RESPECT TRADITION (comprendra qui pourra ;) )

Vai, bon ben voilà c'est Vai. Si vous étiez pas au concert vous avez tout raté. Vous avez vu le Live in Astoria ? Ben là c'était encore mieux.
Pour résumer:
- Solo de basse de Sheehan, ça a duré au moins dans les 5 minutes, je me demande combien de milliers de notes il a joué...
- Grosse session acoustique de 20 minutes au milieu du concert; Rescue Me Or Bury Me, c'était orgasmique.
- Solo clavier: McAlpine a fait un solo bien plus inspiré que dans le DVD. Début complètement planant, suivi par une partie piano... Délicieux (BDB, si tu lis ça...)
- Dave Weiner a joué un de ses morceaux, totalement hallucinant. Ce gars là est vraiment trop bon.

Enfin voilà, si vous voulez une meilleure description, je vous dirais juste: Venez à la prochaine tournée !

Ich mag Groenemeyer

Gerade habe den Music Planet ueber Herbert Groenemeyer angeschaut, und das war echt eine spannende Sendung. Den Typ hat was wirklich in sich, man versteht direkt warum er so erfolgreich war und geblieben ist.

Das ist schon ein lange Zeit her, der er angefangt hat, und der gehoert noch zu die Leute, die richtig Musik koennen. (unter uns: seine Musiker sind wirklich Top!). Seine Stimme finde ich ganz besonders, in die Reihe von Singern wie Phil Collins. Und, soll ich auch sagen, das ist auch nicht so ganz fremd mit der Stimme von Till Lindemann. Provokation, ich weiss... Aber es wuerde mich wundern, dass der Till nie Groenemeyer gehoert haette!

Naechste Schritt fuer mich: Endlich die Texte gut zuhoeren und verstehen! :P

Ubernaechste Schritt: Groenemeyer (und Rammstein ?) in Konzert zu sehen...

Fair trade bei Edeka

Es freut mich sehr zu sehen, dass es bei Edeka Kaffee aus Fair Trade gibt. Was ist denn Fair Trade ? Das ist so, dass wir Kunden, ein Paar Cents mehr bezahlen sollen, dafuer der Produzent (also die Arbeiter im armer Laender) eine gerechtigte Teil von dem Geld kriegen. Das ist schon was. Weil es vielleicht Zeit ist, sich von der Armut zu kuemmern.

Das finde ich eine sehr nette Initiative; ich bin wie alle, ich bin gewoehnt irgendwie mein Kaffee in Supermarkt zu kaufen und nicht im Weltladen. Mal sehen wie es schmeckt ;)

Chirac wants an european Google

The Telegraph reports about Chirac's willing to make an European search engine. Not a bad idea, to my mind, but only if they build it better than the always awaited French News Channel.

Well, it's good for many reasons; I'm particulary curious to see if they will go to the open-source way. There are quite late, so I think this would be the only solution that could make such a project a success. Will they be able to do something that would not look like a bad copy of Google? Will they be able to hire such genious as Google now has?
Beyond that, one must not forget, and I don't know if even our government knows that, Google is not only a search engine, but a new way of working.

I just hope it will not be a financial black-hole for the european citizens.

Radio Paradise, vraiment que du bonheur

Depuis plusieurs mois déjà j'écoute cette radio. Et force est de dire, je ne m'en lasse pas ! Bien au contraire.

Radio Paradise, quel nom attirant n'est-ce-pas ? Ce nom a en fait une source très simple : cette radio sur Internet "émet" depuis Paradise, Californie...

La musique, comme le nom, respire de fraicheur ; on y entend aussi bien Miles Davis que Metallica suivi de Radiohead (même des fois ma chère Keren Ann !). De la pop, du jazz, du metal, du country, du rap, il y a vraiment plein de choses intéressantes sur cette radio. On y entend des extraits de Coldplay X&Y, mais autres que les singles... Ou alors des lives peu diffusés, etc. Souvent il m'arrive de tomber sur des morceaux que j'avais autrefois sur des cassettes a l'époque du lycée. Alors, avec la qualite médiocre (et c'est peu dire) des radios de la région, mon choix est fait : Radio Paradise (garanti sans pubs et jeux à la con).

From this article from unixreview.com : the famous Bell Labs of AT&T, dept 1127 will soon no more exist. There are a lot of articles about it, like this slashot discussion (like always, some very stupid comments, some other very clever and interesting).

Well, sure, this is a part of the computer history finishing; but after all there are some other interesting labs making cool things out there (a lot of people are mentioning Google)... and this Lab continues to live through Linux, and all his cousins BSD.

Théatre

Une pièce surprenante... C'est la première impression qui me vient à l'esprit.

Hier se jouait la dernière représentation de la pièce de théatre "Die drei Leben der Lucie Cabrol" (les trois vies de Lucie Cabrol). Cette pièce est en fait la plus grande oeuvre d'un festival de théatre à Tübingen, "Tübinger Theater Sommer". La pièce devait se jouer dans la cour du château. Quel beau décor cela aurait pû être ! Malheureusement, comme d'habitude il pleuvait hier soir à Tübingen (petite digression: un nouvel arrivant à Tübingen ces temps se ferait beaucoup de soucis pour l'hiver, voyant un été aussi froid et aussi humide. Je ne suis plus nouveau ici, mais j'ai tout de même peur ! En tous cas, on risque pas d'avoir de sécheresse ici, et celui qui arrivera à faire brûler une forêt dans les environs n'est pas encore né !). Bon, trève de plaisanteries, donc hier il pleuvait, alors la pièce a eu lieu dans un vieil entrepôt. Oui forcément, c'est à peine moins excitant.
La pièce m'a vraiment paru bizarre au début. Disons que je me demandais si j'avais vraiment des problèmes dû à la langue où alors si c'était vraiment bizarre. Apparemment les deux; parce que les bougres ne se sont pas contentés de parler en allemand, mais aussi dans le dialecte local. On repère facilement les gens qui sont pas d'ici, comme moi y a des fois il rient pas quand tous les autres rient.

Tout ceci se passait au début du siècle, dans un village français quelque part dans la montagne. Les acteurs ont réussi à nous projeter dans ce monde en quelques minutes. Ce qui n'est pas mince affaire : on était tous déçu d'avoir du béton blanc et des fenêtres à moitié cassées comme décor alors qu'on attendait un château.

Tout a commencé en musique. Et il y avait beaucoup de musique dans cette pièce, la plupart chantée par les musiciens eux-mêmes, à cappela, c'était un plaisir d'entrendre ça !! (en plus, hé hé, les chansons étaient en français !). Peu à peu on pouvait voir grandir la petite Lucie Cabrol. Une fille assez... anormale. Détestée de sa famille, très bizarre de par ses comportements. On rentrait dans le monde fermé d'une famille des montagnes, isolée, et, surtout, rustre. Les dialogues ne faisaient pas tout le temps dans la finesse, mais tout était intense. Les acteurs changaient sans cesse entre animaux et membres de la famille. Etrange, mais on finit par s'y habituer.

Enfin il n'est possible que de donner des impressions de cette pièce, parce que c'est cela que cela produit chez le spectateur. An interesting study about student's hopes

This is a european study that asked some questions to graduating students about their future; you can find it at this address.
I let you read it by yourself, I just wanted to point some interesting things here, that I always supposed but like to see shown in a study:
Page 3-4: German students are expecting the highest salary, but are in one of the most pessimistic countries of this study
Page 5: The French are the most pessimistic about Europe
Page 7: The latin countries tend to see their education systems as bad

And, last but not the least, my employer has a very good ranking :)

Endlich habe ich Socherkahn probiert!

Gestern war es ein Treffen mit andere Leute, die meistens Erasmus Studenten in Besançon waren. Da viele nicht Tübingen kannten, sind wir Stocherkahn gefahren...

Erste Eindrück : das Ding ist nicht sehr stabil; da es auch schon ein bisschen Wasser drin war, hat auch nicht geholfen. Na ja, nach 10 Minuten sind wir alle ruhiger und können dann unser Bier geniessen ;) Ein von uns hat gestochert, und der war ganz gut dafür. Hourra pour Simon!

Danach habe ich (nicht ohne Angst, überhaupt für alle die Leute im Kahn) probiert zu stochern. Mein erste Sorge war, nicht ins Wasser zu fallen mit diesem schweren Stocher. Und zweite, nicht nicht die andere ins Wasser zu bringen! Dann soll man irgendwie schieben, dafür der Kahn sich mindestens ein bisschen bewegt. Und das ist nicht so einfach! Der Stocherkahn wiegt mehrere hundert Kilos und ist 6 oder 7 Meter lang. Mein Problem dabei war, dass der Stocher zu lang war, deswegen war es schwer, der vertikal zu bringen. Da der Neckar weniger als 1 meter tief ist, es ist sehr schwer, eine Stück von mehr als 4 meter ausser die Wasser zu halten.

Es waren 2 Stunden wirklich voll spassig, sehr Lustig. Ich habe schon Lust, es wieder zu machen! Es ist allerdings komisch zu sehen wie viel man spricht mit Leute auf andere Schiffe, die man gar nicht kennt. Vielleicht war es vorher auf die Strassen auch so, als es noch keine Autos gab...

Es soll niemand sein im Wohnheim

Und das schätze ich wegen 2 Gründe:
1- Es braucht umgefähr 2 Minuten, bevor das Wasser in der Dusche heiss wird.
2- Egal wann ich komme, die Waschemaschine sind immer leer.

Emacs with Qt, anyone?

Like so much people, I would like to have a Qt Emacs. Because it would be more elegant (fonts,etc) and better integrated (kde sessions,...). And many peoples are crying for it. So sad they are losing them into holy wars. It should already exist since years.
Just take a look on this Carbon port of Xemacs. Maybe I should simply buy a Mac. If only I could.

The best solution I found (and keep using it), is to start emacs inside Konsole. So I have my pretty fonts, my kde colours and settings; but still it's not always the most efficient to use without widgets.

... Anyway, if someone knows a Qt port of Emacs, please (at least) send an email, or a comment.
BTW I'm very interested too know how you guys deal with this problems, what solutions did you find? (Konsole like me, or special config of the GTK front-end...)

heisser Bus, kalter Bus

Ich frage mich oft im Bus ob die Busfahrer zu ihrer Insasse überhaupt denken. Noch schlimmer, ob die vielleicht nicht uns absichtlich von Büsse anekeln wollen (ohne Kunde ist man ja endlich im Ruhe). Oder vielleicht glauben sie, es gefälle uns.

Tat ist, ich frage mich immer warum im August (oder Juli auch) die Heissung an ist, und das an volle Kraft ! Es ist draussen um 9Uhr schon mehr als 20 Grad, die Sonne scheint, aber nein, es soll im Bus 28 Grad sein!

Heute war es auch was ähnlich. Nein. Schlimmer eigentlich. Was Schade ist, es gibt jetzt im Bus dieses Teufelzeug aus Amerika: Klima-Anlagen... Natürlich hat den Bus fahrer die Idee, es an zu machen, und natürlich so stark wie möglich! Nicht zu sagen uber die Umwelt schaden, und alle Energie misbraucht das es impliziert. Also draussen ist es am Ende Nachmittag 27 Grad, aber im bus nur 20, mit einer schöne kalte Luft von der Decke auf der Schulter. Ich hatte fast vergessen, wie Winter unangenehm ist... Und bald bin ich auch krank!

Könnten vielleicht nicht die Menschen ein bisschen mehr Respekt für die Natur haben?

Hoax quand tu nous tiens...

Qui ne reçoit pas une fois par semaine un de ces mails provenant d'une pauvre femme somalienne qui demande une aide financière pour son fils de 5 ans qui a un cancer ? Bien sûr pour l'aider il faut faire un virement sur un compte au Brésil, et ne pas oublier d'envoyer le mail à au moins 35 personnes (attention le père de l'enfant était un marabout !!! Si vous le faîtes pas, la malédiction vous guète !).

Le problème c'est que comme environ 99,99999% de ces mails, il y a beaucoup plus de chances que votre argent ne tombe dans le compte d'un brésilien barbus qui n'a par ailleurs jamais eu d'enfants. Enfin tout ça pour dire "ne soyez pas crédules". Réfléchissez avant de faire suivre un mail. Ces mails polluent les boîtes aux lettres, ralentissent les autres mails plus importants, bref coûtent de l'argent et profitent des gens.

Bien sûr certaines chaînes sont drôles. J'aime bien les mails d'humour (d'autant plus que j'en reçois peu), je le souligne souvent d'une courte note à celui qui me l'a envoyé. Mais il faut faire une différence entre un petit courrier sympa et des mails d'inconnus qu'on en profite à refourguer à tous ses amis et sa famille. Parce que c'est vraiment un cadeau empoisonné. Je ne parle pas des liens douteux que ce genre de mail peut contenir; votre grand-mère sera contente quand elle verra qu'on lui à tout vidé son compte à la suite d'un mail que vous lui aurez fait suivre...

Vous avez des doutes sur un mail ? Pas besoin d'être bac+5 en informatique, il suffit juste d'aller voire sur Hoaxbuster (site français). C'est un site qui référencie tous les canulars, faux mails, etc en circulation. Ce site est vraiment fiable. Vous faites une petite recherche en collant une partie du message dont vous doutez dans la section 'recherche', et vous allez tout de suite voir s'il y a 15000 résultats ou 0.

En faisant ça systématiquement vous allez éviter:
1 - De polluer les boîtes mails de vos amis; ils préféreraient sûrement des mails plus sympa de votre part, plus personnels
2 - De favoriser les pirates et les cyber-criminels en général
3 - De ralentir les serveurs d'emails (histoire que votre invit' pour votre anniversaire, elle, n'arrive pas 3 heures trop tard !!)

Nostalgie quand tu nous tiens...

Décidement pas moyen d'y échapper. Hier sur TV5, la toujours excellente émission 'Des Racines Et Des Ailes' etait axée sur Paris rive gauche. Mon quartier préferé, de loin. Ca fait chaud au coeur de revoir tous ces endroits, présentés de façon aussi élégante. C'est beaaaauuu quand même !!! J'en ai presque oublié que j'ai habité pas si loin de là-bas dans le passé ! Ils ont même montré des clubs de jazz, les traîtres ! Le sentiment que provoque Paris chez moi est toujours ambivalent, mais la ville m'attire toujours autant, surtout quand je n'y suis pas (parisien à temps partiel, mon rêve).

Ah, il falloir que j'y retourne sous peu.
